An editor changes the contents of the file, changes could be anywhere,
not just at the end. Therefore the whole file is re-written on save
which is not an append operation.

I added the append only attribute to a text file.
But I get operation not permitted when I try to use Geany to edit the file.
But I can use "echo new >> test.txt and it does append.
What am I not understanding?
Thanks,
Andrew Kennedy
